Veteran US Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings is dead. He died October 17 at a hospice center in Baltimore.
The cause of his death is due to longstanding health challenges.
He was the chairman of the House of Oversight. He became Maryland’s 7th Congressional District rep since 1996
Mr. Cummings was seriously involved in Donald Trump’s impeachment inquiry.
President Trump responded to him with a week-long tweet attacking the congressman and advised him to spend time in fixing his district.
Mr. Elijah Cummings and his committee also grilled the formal Trump personal attorney, Michael Cohen.
Earlier this year, Mr. Cummings also crashed with administration officers. He classed with acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan on “empathy deficit”.
The death of Cummings will cause Nancy Pelosi to have a major say in who the next chairman will be. The house will nominate a new chairman, but the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will determine who will become the Chair.
Mr. Cummings’s staff has been the one doing most of the works due to Cummings’s absence in recent times caused by his longstanding health challenges. The staff also helped in leading the charge in the impeachment inquiry.
President Trump recently reacted to cummings death. He dropped a condolence message on Twitter.
“I got to see first hand the strength, passion, and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!”
Cummings and Trump have not always been in disagreement. Mr. Cummings told newsmen two years ago that he and Mr. President found common ground on their shared interest in lowering drug prices.
Mr. Cumming also stood up for Republican Rep. Mark Meadows, in the face of accusations of racism.
Cummings was a big-time Democrat, and he loved seeing people express their civil rights. He was born into a family of Southern sharecroppers and Baptist preachers.
